Advertising Policy

How ads appear on Book Recommendations, which companies may serve them, the rules we follow, how we advertise ourselves, and how you can control what you see.

Last updated:

The tools and guides on Book Recommendations are free. Advertising and similar income help us pay for hosting, development and checking platform rules. This page explains how that works. It should be read with our privacy policy, cookie policy, editorial policy and terms of use.

Summary

  • We may show ads from Google AdSense and from any other advertising network, exchange, platform or advertiser, in any country.
  • We may also advertise Book Recommendations on search engines, social networks and professional networks.
  • Ads are always labelled and never change a calculation, ranking or recommendation.
  • You decide whether advertising cookies are used where the law requires your consent, and you can opt out of personalised ads at any time.

Ads shown on this site

We may use Google AdSense and any other third-party advertising partner to place ads on our pages. These include advertising networks, ad exchanges, supply-side and demand-side platforms, ad servers, header-bidding services, affiliate networks, native-ad and content-recommendation services, direct advertisers and sponsors. We do not limit ourselves to a fixed list. Partners can change from week to week, and ads are often chosen in real time by auction, so we do not name each one individually. We only work with companies that publish a privacy policy and that follow the privacy and advertising laws that apply to them.

Ad partners may use cookies and similar technologies on this site to deliver, personalise, limit and measure ads. How they do that, and how to say no, is explained in the privacy policy and the cookie policy.

Direct ads, sponsorships and agencies

Besides ad networks, we may sell ad space, sponsorships, sponsored posts, newsletter and social placements, link placements and other paid promotions directly to brands, agencies, networks and individuals. Those sales are covered by the advertising and sponsorship terms. Directly sold ads follow the same rules as every other ad:

  • they are labelled "Advertisement", "Sponsored" or "Paid partnership";
  • paid links carry rel="sponsored", as search engines require, and we do not sell links to pass ranking value;
  • they must not imitate the look or labels of Google AdSense or any other network's ads, a menu, a tool or a download button, and must not sit inside or be mixed with another network's ad unit;
  • they must not encourage clicks, use deceptive buttons or arrows, or use pop-ups, redirects or other intrusive formats;
  • we may refuse, pause or remove any ad at any time, and we do not accept prohibited categories (adult, illegal, deceptive, dangerous or misleading content, among others);
  • buying an ad never buys a review, ranking or recommendation.

Our ads.txt file lists the companies authorised to sell our ad space, and we work only with sellers and agencies who agree to these rules.

Rules we follow

  • Ads are labelled. Each ad block is marked "Advertisement" so you can tell it apart from our content.
  • Ads stay separate from content. Ads never look like a tool result, a menu item, a download button or a recommendation, and we do not place them so that they are easy to click by mistake.
  • No intrusive formats. We do not use pop-ups, pop-unders, forced redirects, ads that hide the page, or ads that play sound without being clicked.
  • No ads in sensitive places. We keep ads off our legal pages, contact page, error pages, form dialogs, and any login, account, cart, checkout or order-confirmation pages.
  • Quality and safety. We aim to block ads that are misleading, adult, hateful, harmful, or that promote malware, scams, illegal products or fake offers, by using the controls of each ad partner. No filter is perfect, so please tell us about any ad that breaks these rules.
  • Ads never shape content. Advertisers cannot see or approve what we publish, and do not receive favourable coverage. See the editorial policy.
  • Each partner's rules also apply. We comply with the publisher policies of the networks we use, including Google's AdSense program policies.

Our own advertising and marketing

We may promote Book Recommendations through paid campaigns on Google Ads, Microsoft Advertising (Bing), LinkedIn, Meta (Facebook and Instagram), X, TikTok, Pinterest, Reddit, YouTube and any other advertising platform, and through free social media posts and partnerships. To run and measure these campaigns we may use each platform's tag, pixel or conversion measurement on this site. This is explained in the privacy policy. Our campaigns send real people to the site, and we do not buy bot, incentivised or fake traffic, and do not ask anyone to click ads.

Affiliate links and sponsored content

Some links may be affiliate links, which pay us a commission if you buy after clicking, at no extra cost to you. See the full affiliate disclosure. We may also sell our own products and services; see the terms of sale. We may also publish sponsored content or accept direct sponsors. Affiliate links and sponsored items will be clearly disclosed on the page where they appear, such as "Affiliate link" or "Sponsored", and they never change what we recommend or the numbers our tools show.

Invalid traffic

Advertisers pay for genuine attention. Please do not click ads on this site to support us, and do not use automated tools to view or click them. Ad partners monitor for invalid activity and can reduce or withhold payment and block sources they suspect. Our rules for visitors are in the terms of use.

Your choices

  • Where consent is required (for example in the EEA, UK and Switzerland), you choose whether personalised advertising and measurement cookies are used, using the consent message. You can reopen it to change your choice.
  • You can opt out of personalised ads in Google's Ads Settings, aboutads.info, the Network Advertising Initiative and Your Online Choices.
  • You can block cookies or use a browser privacy signal such as Global Privacy Control. You can use an ad blocker, although ads are one of the ways we keep the tools free.
  • Opting out does not remove ads. It means the ads you see are not based on your interests.

Children

This site is written for adults. We do not knowingly direct ads to children or knowingly allow personalised advertising to be shown to them.

Report an ad or ask a question

If you see an ad that is misleading, offensive, unsafe or in the wrong place, tell us through the contact page or at info@booksrecommendations.com. Include the page address, what the ad said and, if you can, a screenshot. You can also use the "AdChoices" or "Report this ad" control on the ad itself, which goes straight to the ad network.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when our advertising arrangements change. The date at the top shows the latest version.
