Cookie Policy
What we store in your browser, what advertising, analytics and marketing partners may add, and how to control it.
Cookies are small text files a website saves in your browser. Similar technologies, such as local storage, pixels, tags and device identifiers, do the same job. This page explains what Book Recommendations (booksrecommendations.com) and its partners use so you can decide what to allow. It forms part of our privacy policy.
What this site stores
| Name | Type | Purpose | Lifetime |
|---|---|---|---|
| pd_books_v1 | Local storage (this site) | Saves book profiles you create in the metadata checker, on your device only. Never sent to us. | Until you delete the profile or clear browser data |
| pd_admin | Cookie (this site) | Keeps the site owner signed in to the dashboard. Strictly necessary. Never set for ordinary visitors. | 12 hours |
These two items are the only ones we set ourselves. Everything below is set by third parties and appears only when the related service is switched on and, where the law requires it, you have agreed.
Categories of cookies and similar technologies
| Category | What it does | Who sets it | Your consent needed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strictly necessary | Keeps the site secure and working, for example the dashboard sign-in and your saved consent choice. | Us and our consent tool | No |
| Preferences | Remembers settings you chose, such as saved book profiles. | Us | No, it stays on your device |
| Advertising | Shows ads, limits how often you see them, personalises them, measures views and clicks, and detects invalid clicks and fraud. | Google and any other advertising network, exchange, platform or advertiser we work with | Yes, where the law requires it |
| Analytics and performance | Counts visits, shows which pages are used and how fast they load, without being needed to run the tools. | Analytics and monitoring services we may use, such as Google Analytics | Yes, where the law requires it |
| Marketing and social media | Lets advertising and social platforms measure our own campaigns, build audiences of people who visited, and show our ads elsewhere. Also set by embedded social content. | Platforms such as Google Ads, Microsoft Advertising (Bing), LinkedIn, Meta, X, TikTok, Pinterest, Reddit, YouTube and others | Yes, where the law requires it |
Third-party cookie names, such as those beginning with "__gads", "_ga", "IDE" or "_fbp", and their lifetimes are decided by the provider and change often, so we do not list every one here. Each provider explains its own cookies in its own policy.
Advertising cookies (Google AdSense and other ad partners)
When advertising is switched on, Google and its advertising partners may set or read cookies and similar identifiers in your browser to show ads, limit how often you see an ad, measure ad performance, protect against invalid clicks and, where you have agreed and the law allows it, personalise ads. Other advertising companies that place or bid on ads on this site may do the same with their own technology. These are set by those companies, not by us. Google explains its cookies at policies.google.com/technologies/cookies and policies.google.com/technologies/ads. Our advertising policy explains how we choose and limit ads.
Analytics, marketing pixels and tags
We may add analytics, tag-manager or marketing tags, for example to measure which pages are useful or to measure our own advertising on search engines and social networks. When we do, they fall under the categories above and are covered by your consent choice. Blocking them never stops the tools from working.
Consent for visitors in Europe and the UK
Visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland are shown a consent message from a consent management platform before personalised ads, analytics or marketing cookies are used. You can accept, decline or manage your choices there, and change them later using the message's privacy settings option. Your choice is remembered in a cookie or local-storage item set by the consent tool, which is strictly necessary for that purpose.
Google Fonts
Page fonts load from Google. This does not set a cookie on our domain, but your browser sends a request to Google servers and Google sees your IP address.
How to control cookies
- Use your browser settings to block or delete cookies and site data. Guides: Chrome, Firefox, Safari.
- Turn off personalised ads in Google's Ads Settings, or visit aboutads.info.
- Use industry opt-out tools: Network Advertising Initiative (US), Your Online Choices (Europe), AdChoices Canada.
- Turn on a privacy signal in your browser, such as Global Privacy Control, or use a tracking-protection or ad-blocking extension.
- On a phone or tablet, reset or limit your advertising identifier in the system privacy settings.
- Manage ad preferences directly on social and professional networks you use, such as your Meta, LinkedIn, X, TikTok or Microsoft account settings.
- Blocking cookies does not stop the tools from working. Blocking local storage only means saved book profiles will not be kept.
