Calculators such as the royalty, print cost and spine tools apply the formulas the platforms publish. Real payments can still differ because of taxes, currency conversion, returns, discounts, printing options, rule changes and rounding. A cover or interior file that passes our checks can still be rejected by the platform. Always confirm the final number or requirement on the platform's own screen before you publish, order proofs or print copies.

Where our figures come from

Platform figures are read from each platform's official help pages and stored in one data file with a link to the source and the date we checked. Where we could not confirm a rule on an official page, we label it as unconfirmed. Where a platform publishes no formula, the tool asks you for the platform's own quote instead of guessing. See platform rules and sources and our editorial policy. Rules change without notice, so a figure can be out of date even if it was right on the day we checked.
