Affiliate and Sponsorship Disclosure

Some links on this site may earn us a commission or payment. Here is exactly how that works and what it does not change.

Last updated:

This page explains the commercial relationships we may have with companies we mention or link to. It is written to meet the disclosure rules of regulators such as the US Federal Trade Commission (16 CFR Part 255), the UK Advertising Standards Authority and CMA, and similar bodies elsewhere, and the terms of the affiliate programmes we join.

In short

  • Some links on Book Recommendations may be affiliate links. If you click one and buy something, or sign up, we may earn a commission. It costs you nothing extra.
  • We may also receive free products, services, trials, fees or other benefits (sponsorship) from companies.
  • We tell you when a link or a page is affiliate, paid or sponsored. Where practical, the disclosure appears on the page, near the link, before you click, in clear words such as "Affiliate link", "Sponsored" or "We may earn a commission".
  • Commissions and payments never change a calculation in our tools, and we recommend a product only if we believe it is useful to authors.

Which programmes

We may join the affiliate, referral, partner or sponsorship programme of any company or platform in any country, whether run directly by the company or through an affiliate network. Examples include Amazon Associates, and networks such as Impact, CJ Affiliate, ShareASale, Awin, Rakuten Advertising, PartnerStack, ClickBank, Digistore24 and others, as well as direct programmes of publishing, design, writing, hosting, software, courses and book-marketing companies. The list changes, so we do not name each one here. We follow the rules of each programme we join.

Where we take part in the Amazon Associates programme, the following applies: Book Recommendations is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. This statement applies only if and when we have an active Associates account.

How links and tracking work

  • Affiliate links contain a code or pass through a tracking address so the company knows we sent you. Links may be shortened or redirected.
  • The company or affiliate network may set cookies or use similar technology to remember that you came from us, usually for a limited time. See the cookie policy and privacy policy. You can block these cookies; the link will still work, but we may not get credit.
  • We mark paid and affiliate links with the rel="sponsored" attribute (and where appropriate nofollow) so that search engines understand they are not editorial endorsements.
  • Prices, availability, offers and terms belong to the seller and can change. Check them on the seller's site before you buy. Your purchase is a contract with the seller, not with us.

Our independence and honesty

  • Our opinions are our own. A company cannot buy a positive review or approve our text. If we received a product or service free, or were paid, we say so.
  • We aim to review honestly and to mention drawbacks. We do not claim to have used a product unless we have.
  • We do not make up reviews, ratings or testimonials, and we do not hide that a link is paid.
  • Where we have a relationship with several products in a category, we do not rank one higher only because it pays more.
  • Earnings from affiliate links and ads help us keep the tools free.

Sponsored posts and partnerships

If we publish a sponsored post, a paid partnership, a guest article with payment, or a review of a product we were paid or given for free, it is labelled at the top, in plain words, as "Sponsored", "Paid partnership" or similar. Sponsored content must follow the same accuracy rules as the rest of the site (see the editorial policy). We may refuse a sponsor.

Our own products and services

We may promote our own products and services on this site. Where a page mentions something we sell, we say it is ours.

Advertising

Display ads from advertising networks are a separate matter, covered in the advertising policy.
