How to Track Book Sales Across Platforms

Quick answer

Download each platform's sales report as a CSV every month, put the date, title, platform, units and royalty into one table, and total by book and by platform. Then compare months, not single days.

Quick facts

  • Each platform names its columns differently, so you must map them to one set of headings.
  • Reports arrive in different currencies and on different dates.
  • Royalty is paid after the sale, so a month's report may not match the month's payment.
  • The sales dashboard reads CSV files in your browser and does not upload them.
  • Keep the original files as your record.

If you publish on more than one platform, your numbers are scattered across several dashboards. A simple monthly routine puts them in one place and shows what is working.

Collect the reports

Once a month, download the sales report from each platform you use. Save the original files with the platform and month in the name, such as kdp-2026-09.csv. These are your records, so do not edit them.

Use one set of columns

Platforms use different headings for the same idea. Decide on five columns: date, title, platform, units and royalty. Map each report to those columns. Note the currency of each, because royalty in pounds and royalty in dollars cannot be added together.

Combine them

Load the files into the sales dashboard. It maps the columns, totals units and royalty by book and by platform and exports a summary. Your files are read in your browser and are not uploaded.

Read the numbers sensibly

  • Compare whole months. Single days are noisy.
  • Look at royalty per copy as well as units, since format and platform change it.
  • Expect delays: payments arrive after the sales month, and returns can reduce a month later.
  • Check that every platform is in the table before you draw conclusions.

Act on what you see

If one platform sells much better, look at why: price, category or promotion. If a format earns very little per copy, check the price against the printing cost with the pricing guide. Our sales reports article shows the column differences in detail.

Step by step (about 15 minutes)

  1. Download every platform report. Once a month, download the CSV from each platform and save the original.
  2. Name the files clearly. Include the platform and month in each file name.
  3. Map the columns. Match each report to date, title, platform, units and royalty, and note the currency.
  4. Combine in the dashboard. Load the files into the sales dashboard and check the totals.
  5. Compare whole months. Look at monthly totals by book and by platform rather than single days.
  6. Record what you change. Note price, category and promotion changes so you can link them to results.

Frequently asked questions

Are my sales files uploaded?

No. The dashboard reads them in your browser and keeps them on your device.

Why do my totals differ from the payment I received?

Platforms pay after the sales month and may deduct returns or fees. Compare reports with payment statements separately.

Can I mix currencies?

Keep them apart or convert using a rate you note down. Adding different currencies directly gives wrong totals.

How often should I check?

Monthly is enough for most authors. Check more often during a launch.
